The Georgian Technical University is launching a unique Georgian-Austrian water resources management project. Within the framework of the project, a Laboratory of Hydraulic and Hydrotechnical Research will become operational with its full-fledged research/experimental base, following the completion of nearly one-year negotiations between the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia and the Government of Austria. Specifically, the Austrian company Bilfinger VAM Anlagentechnik GmbH, selected by the Austrian Government, will assist the Georgian side in establishing and equipping the laboratory. The company has implemented similar projects in numerous countries worldwide.

The goals and objectives of the project were presented today by Tamar Sanikidze, Minister of Education and Science of Georgia, and Archil Prangishvili, Rector of the Technical University, to Giorgi Kvirikashvili, Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development; Kakha Kaladze, Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Energy; Nodar Khaduri, Minister of Finance; and Gigla Agulashvili, Minister of Environment and Natural Resources Protection.

As known, the effective utilization of local energy resources, infrastructural projects, and efficient agricultural development depend on scientifically substantiated decisions made at a highly professional level. To this end, the laboratory will be launched, and its activities will be based on global experience, the latest scientific achievements, and best international practices. Modern computational simulation methods, physical modeling, and field observations will be utilized. Specialists from Austria, Italy, and Switzerland will be invited to work in the laboratory.

The laboratory will be equipped with the latest technologies and apparatus. It will have 3 distinct functions: teaching, research, and consulting services. Teaching will take place within bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs both in Georgia and abroad.

The laboratory will work on formulating a water resources management strategy, studying and analyzing the risks and expected impacts of hydrotechnical and infrastructural structures on the environment, and creating scientific foundations for their prevention and management. In addition, the laboratory will provide consulting services to investors interested in these fields during the design, construction, and operation stages. This will be particularly important during the implementation of large-scale projects such as the highway, Anaklia Port, Khudoni HPP, Nenskra HPP, and others.
