My friends - My environment
One chromosome and a boundary that does not actually exist โ March 21 marks World Down Syndrome Day. In connection with this day, a charity event entitled "Me and My Friend" was held at the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia, with the participation of the State Pantomime Theatre and the International Center of Plastic Arts in Georgia (headed by Amiran Shalikashvili). Within the framework of the event, Minister Tamar Sanikidze hosted students with Down syndrome and their friends. The joyous mood of the children was ensured by the actors of the State Pantomime Theatre.
March 21 was designated as World Down Syndrome Day on November 10, 2011, under the auspices of the United Nations. 21.03 carries a certain symbolism, as Down syndrome is manifested by the triplication of the 21st chromosome.
This year's international slogan is "My Friends, My Community."
Considering the importance of an inclusive environment for today's child and future adult, the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia implements numerous projects. Over the years, based on relevant educational programs, activities, legislative acts, and information campaigns, significant steps have been taken in the direction of inclusive education, and much has been accomplished both for students with special educational needs and for vocational students with special educational needs and disabilities.
Since 2013, it has become possible for any person with special educational needs to register for vocational education programs, create an educational environment in accordance with individual needs, and acquire a profession.
On International Down Syndrome Day, Tamar Sanikidze once again called upon school administrations and teachers to ensure the creation of an appropriate learning environment for students with special educational needs, including those with Down syndrome, so that they can receive a proper education alongside their peers and be fully integrated into the educational process.
