Auxiliary textbooks have been created for SEN (Special Educational Needs) students
On the initiative of the Ministry of Education and Science, supporting textbooks and resources in Georgian language and mathematics have been created for students with special educational needs (SEN). These materials were handed over to schools by Lia Gigauri, Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Georgia. A total of 11 titles have been published; some of these serve as supporting textbooks for SEN students to facilitate their acquisition of the Georgian language and mathematics during the classroom process, while others are guidebooks for teachers that provide detailed explanations on how to plan and conduct lessons using the principles of Universal Design for Learning in order to increase the engagement of students with all needs.
The textbook takes into account the diversity and differences of students based on various criteria – interests, aspirations, and abilities – and combines not only standard recommendations for achieving learning outcomes set by the curriculum, but also details recommendations and opportunities for adapting the presented activities in consideration of students' various educational needs.
In addition to public schools, the developed resources will be provided to six day centers for homeless children operating under the Ministry of Labor, Health and Social Affairs.
Along with the Ministry of Education and Science, the development of the guidebooks and supporting resources was supported by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), World Vision Georgia, Save the Children, and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
