International Conference Held at the Medical University

"TEMPUS MUMEENA" is a three-year EU-funded Tempus project titled "Modernization of Undergraduate Medical Education in the Eastern Neighbouring Area of the European Union".
The conference is attended by all partner countries implementing the project: Leeds (United Kingdom), Utrecht (Netherlands), Granada (Spain), Rome Tor Vergata (Italy), Kyiv and Ivano-Frankivsk (Ukraine), Baku and Nakhchivan (Azerbaijan), Tbilisi State Medical University and Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University.
The conference is chaired by the project coordinator – Professor Trudie Roberts, President of the Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE) and Director of the Leeds Institute of Medical Education. In addition to Georgian professors, 23 foreign representatives of the field from partner universities are participating in the conference.
The objective of the project was to develop an integrated undergraduate medical education curriculum in accordance with the standards of the Association for Medical Education in Europe, the thematic network for medical education MEDINE, and the World Federation for Medical Education.
Within the framework of the project, special training sessions in medical education were conducted at European partner universities in modern teaching and assessment methodology; annual conferences on topical issues of medical education were held with the participation of internationally recognized experts; and methodical recommendations were prepared.
Based on the project, the Academic Development Center was established at Tbilisi State Medical University, where academic staff retraining has been systematically carried out since 2011.
The progress of the project was positively evaluated by European Commission representative Mr. Klaus Haupt in an official letter sent in May 2013 to the project coordinator, Professor Trudie Roberts, President of the Association for Medical Education in Europe. The letter highlights the major contribution of Tbilisi State Medical University to the successful implementation of the project, specifically the creation of the Academic Development Center, which is the result of the joint efforts of the university administration and the project coordinator.
The implementation of the project and the introduction of new teaching and assessment methods have sharply increased the ranking of Tbilisi State Medical University. It participates in the working groups of key European medical education regulatory organizations – the Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE) and MEDINE, where medical education standards are developed and regulatory documents are created. It is noteworthy that among universities from non-EU countries, only Tbilisi State Medical University and Ankara University are members of the MEDINE working groups.
