Teaching two foreign languages will remain mandatory for students

In recent days, incorrect information has been disseminated by the media, according to which the teaching of a second foreign language in public schools will become elective rather than mandatory.
The Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia unequivocally states that this information is untrue. On the contrary, the Ministry's goal is to establish an even higher standard of foreign language teaching in schools.
Accordingly, the Ministry clarifies that in the process of developing the national curriculum, foreign languages will be given even greater importance in the future. The teaching of two foreign languages will remain mandatory for students — the English language from the first grade, while the second mandatory foreign language will be chosen by the student starting from the 5th grade from among the languages offered by the school.
Moreover, schools will have the obligation, within the framework of the second mandatory foreign language, to offer students at least two languages to choose from, provide them with freedom of choice, and ensure a high level of language instruction.
