Board of Trustees elections will be held in general education institutions
On June 17, 2019, elections for the Board of Trustees – the highest governing body of the school – will be held in general education institutions (public schools) of Georgia.
Registration of candidates for membership in the Board of Trustees will begin on June 5 and will last through June 11 inclusive. These are the fifth regular elections (the first elections were held in 2006). The Board of Trustees is composed of teachers, parents of students, and a representative elected by the high school student self-government.
The Board of Trustees is one of the most important links in school management. Schools elect an equal number of parents and teachers to the Board of Trustees. Additionally, the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of Georgia and local self-government have the right to have their representatives on the Board of Trustees.
The school Board of Trustees elects the school principal, approves the school's internal regulations and budget upon the presentation of the school principal, elects the disciplinary committee, approves the school curriculum, and exercises other powers granted by legislation. Teachers and students' parents are elected to the Board of Trustees for a 3-year term.
In order to improve the organization and quality of the elections of the Boards of Trustees, the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of Georgia monitors the election process in all regions of Georgia.
Active members of civil society, as well as representatives of non-governmental organizations who wish to engage in the processes and monitor the elections, can attend the Board of Trustees elections with the status of an observer; they must register with the school election commission.
