"Queen Lear" - A play by Andriy Zholdak

The renowned Ukrainian director Andriy Zholdak is staging a production in Tbilisi based on William Shakespeare's tragedy "King Lear", entitled "Queen Lear". A press conference regarding this initiative was led by Irina Saganelidze, Head of the International Programs and Promotion Division at the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport; Ketevan Dolidze, Artistic Director of the Tbilisi International Festival of Arts "Gift" named after Mikheil Tumanishvili; and Andriy Zholdak, the play's author and director.
Renowned Ukrainian director and prominent figure of European avant-garde theatre, Andriy Zholdak, is implementing the international project "Shakespeare. Meetings" in various countries around the world. "Queen Lear" is being staged precisely within the framework of this project.
"The action of the play unfolds within a family. The theme addresses the relationship between generations: parents and children. The director demonstrates how human egoism, materialism, and hatred destroy family harmony, love, and mutual respect, ultimately leading human relationships to complete collapse. Every mise-en-scene is a mystification. In the performance, actions transition from real life into the theatre and return once again to reality."
The play will be staged on both Georgian and international theatre stages. It features the following cast: Ketevan Dolidze, Teimuraz Gvalia, Paata Baratashvili, Irina Giunashvili, Anri Bibineishvili, Buba Chogoshvili, Tamar Bziava, Tamar Buachidze, Ilia Cheishvili, Soso Khvedelidze, and Lasha Gabunia.
The project is implemented with the support of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport and the Embassy of Ukraine in Georgia. The project is carried out by the Non-Entrepreneurial Legal Entity (N(N)LE) - Mikheil Tumanishvili International Festival of Arts "Gift" on the stage of the Tbilisi Griboedov Theatre within the framework of Check in Georgia. The official insurer of the project is "ARDI"; the partner is the "Georgian Chamber of Culture".
