The Minister noted that very soon Tbilisi State University will have an educational space meeting modern standards.
Mikheil Chkhenkeli: “Today we visited Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University and inspected the rehabilitation process currently underway in the second building. First of all, I would like to remind the public that the rehabilitation of the University's first building was fully financed by Mr. Bidzina Ivanishvili and the Cartu Foundation, as a result of which TSU now has a worthy first building, one befitting the mother university.
Currently, the rehabilitation of the second building is underway, which is also a historical structure, and the total cost of the project is 27 million GEL. This is the amount that will be utilized for the complete rehabilitation of the second building. This was a gift from the state to the University in connection with its 100th anniversary. The process is proceeding very intensively, and we are very satisfied with the initial results. TSU will very soon have a second building befitting its dignity, history, and modernity.”
By the decree of the Government of Georgia and with the support of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport, a total of 27 million GEL will be spent on the rehabilitation of TSU's second building. The first phase of internal renovation works began in 2018, for the implementation of which the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport of Georgia allocated 5.7 million GEL. Within the framework of the first phase of the project, structural reinforcement works of the building were carried out, the roof and windows were replaced, and the facade, restrooms, and central heating system were renovated.
The second phase of the rehabilitation works began in 2019 and will be completed by 2021. During this period, the building will be fully rehabilitated, and fire safety, cooling-ventilation systems, and elevators will be installed. Following the renovation works, the second building will fully comply with all modern international standards. A total area of 25,000 sq.m. will be renovated.
During the implementation of the internal rehabilitation works, the educational process will proceed without interruption. The lecture process will be distributed among TSU's academic buildings.
The second building of TSU was constructed in 1940 based on the design of architect Mikheil Savishvili, taking into account the architecture and style of the University's first building.
Today, Tbilisi State University is housed in 27 buildings designated for academic and research purposes.
