Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport and President of the National Basketball Federation Paata Guraspauri held a joint press conference. The topic of the press conference was the construction of a new Sports Palace for the 2021 European Basketball Championship. According to Shalva Gogoladze, the construction of the sports arena designed for 10,000 spectators will begin in the near future, and the complex will fully comply with the requirements of the International Basketball Federation. The press conference was also attended by Irakli Dolaberidze, Head of the Sports Development Department, and Vladimer Boisa, Vice-President of the National Basketball Federation.
Shalva Gogoladze: “At today’s meeting of the Government of Georgia, a crucial decision was made, according to which the construction of a new Sports Palace for EuroBasket 2021 will begin in the near future. The main part of the complex – the sports arena – will seat 10,000 spectators and will fully meet the requirements of the International Basketball Federation. Upon completion of the construction, we will receive a modern-standard, multi-space and multifunctional sports complex infrastructurally connected to each other, where the competitive part of the tournament will be held in the newly built arena, while the spaces of the existing Olympic Palace will be used directly for the training and practice process during the competition. After the conclusion of EuroBasket, a new sports hub will be created on the territory of the complex, which will allow us to host large-scale international tournaments in various sports.”
The preliminary preparation stage for the construction works of the new arena of the Tbilisi Olympic Palace, located on University Street, has already begun. The total cost of the project is 71 million GEL, of which 50 million GEL will be allocated from the budget of the current year, and 21 million GEL from the budget of the next year.
3 arenas complying with international standards will be built within the sports complex, providing the opportunity to host significant international tournaments in various sports. The construction will be completed in June 2021.
As the Prime Minister stated at the government meeting, hosting the group matches of the 2021 European Basketball Championship is very important both in terms of sports and tourism development. According to him, after the completion of the European Championship, Tbilisi will be left with new multifunctional sports infrastructure.
The group stage matches of the 2021 European Basketball Championship will be held in Tbilisi from September 2-19.
