April 6 marks the International Sports Day
April 6 marks the International Sports Day. For the first time in the history, owing to the decision of Peace and Sport organisation, the events and activities dedicated to the Sports Day will be transferred to the online platform. "I stay at home and exercise" is the key motto the world unites under on this day.
The Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of Georgia, Mikheil Chkhenkeli congratulated all athletes, people working in the field of sports, representatives of various sports organizations, federations, media and sports fans with the International Sports Day.
"Congratulations to all athletes, coaches, doctors, referees, people involved in sports, sports media representatives and, of course, sports fans with this important day!
In 2013, the UN General Assembly declared April 6 as the International Sports Day. And according to the official resolution, since April 6, 2014, Georgia has been celebrating this date together with the world. Every year, our country joins the initiative with dignity, which is aimed at establishing and developing peace around the world, through sports.
Please note, that April 6 was chosen symbolically, as on this very day - April 6, in 1896, the first modern Olympic Games were officially reopened in Athens, the capital of Greece. So International Sports Day is associated with the date of the revival of the Olympics.
It is important to note, that we have been involved in the #WhiteCard campaign for the second year in a row. In 2019, during the award ceremony, the international organisation - Peace and Sport nominated the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of Georgia with the "Best Initiative of the Year" award.
Our ministry truly deserved this recognition for the successful implementation of the "White Card" campaign, for which I thank everyone involved in the campaign.
Due to the ongoing circumstances, this year, owing to the decision Peace and Sport organisation, the events dedicated to the International Sports Day have been moved to the online platform.
"I stay home and exercise” – the world has united around this motto. I urge everyone to be actively involved in the campaign and I especially want to highlight our athletes.
As you know, various tournaments and championships in many sports have been temporarily suspended and postponed indefinitely. The Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics has also been postponed for a year, for which the whole world, including, of course, Georgia, was vigorously preparing for.
Today, our athletes continue to actively train at home in order to maintain their excellent shape and, after defeating Coronavirus, Georgia will once again shine on the international sports arena.
