The Minister of Education and Science of Georgia, Mikheil Chkhenkeli hosted the Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine, Sergey Shkarlet, who is visiting Georgia, and discussed plans for cooperation in the field of education and science.
The ministers thanked each other for the friendly and partnership relations between the two countries and briefed each other on ongoing projects in the education system.
Mikheil Chkhenkeli informed the guest about the mega-project of the Georgian education system - Kutaisi International University and noted that the scientific-research space of European standards was created in Georgia as a result of the extremely important charity of Mr. Bidzina Ivanishvili and his family. According to the Minister, the high standard of the university and the degree of internationalization are conditioned by two main approaches: on the one hand, academic programs are created in cooperation with the world's leading universities in a specific field; The university will open its doors to foreign students in the near future, including Ukrainian students.
Mikheil Chkhenkeli also informed the guest about the ongoing project at the Kutaisi International University โ the Hadron Therapy Center, which is also funded by the Cartu Foundation. With the involvement of foreign science at the centre, research will be conducted in nuclear experimental physics, radiation biophysics and chemistry, which has been expressed by many foreign scientists. This process will begin with the development of state-of-the-art cyclotrons, which are manufactured and assembled by the world's leading manufacturer of cancer proton therapy equipment (IBA). One cyclotron will be used to treat cancer, while the other will only be used for scientific research.
For his part, Sergey Shkarlet briefed Mikheil Chkhenkeli on ongoing reforms in Ukraine's education system, including information on a university in Kiev initiated by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to enable young people to pursue future professions, including cybersecurity and IT.
The sides stressed the need to strengthen cooperation between Georgian and Ukrainian higher education and research institutions and discussed steps to be taken in this direction.
The Ministers of Education and Science of Georgia and Ukraine informed each other about the measures taken during the pandemic period, which served to ensure the continuity of education.
