Database of Georgian Illustrated Manuscript Miniatures Will Be Created

The “Database of Miniatures Included in the Decoration of Georgian Illustrated Manuscripts (9th-19th cc.)” is being created. Today, Tamar Sanikidze, Minister of Education and Science of Georgia, Buba Kudava, Director of the National Centre of Manuscripts of the Ministry, the authors of the project, representatives of the National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation, and journalists attended the presentation of the project.
The project will be implemented with the funding of the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia and the co-funding of the National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation. The aim of the project is to create an electronic database based on the Georgian illustrated manuscripts preserved at the National Centre of Manuscripts and Georgian museums, which will encompass the miniatures included in the illuminated manuscripts of the 9th-19th centuries.
This issue is currently relevant, as there is no existing work based on such samples of Georgian miniature painting. The relevance of the issue is also determined by the fact that elements characteristic specifically of Georgian miniature painting have not been included in international scientific circulation. The project will make it possible for Georgian material to be translated into foreign languages and become accessible to the international scientific community.
