Farmer Education and Innovative Greenhouses in Samegrelo
The Farmers' Advisory or Extension Center provides information and training services to local farmers. In 2013 and 2014, practical assistance was received here by more than 700 farmers. Additionally, up to 30 demonstration projects were implemented, aiming to introduce modern technologies in agriculture.
The innovative greenhouse is one of the most successful demonstration projects, implemented in cooperation with Shota Meskhia Zugdidi State Teaching University. The energy-efficient greenhouse utilizes a hybrid energy system—geothermal and solar energy. The greenhouse is covered with polycarbonate, a durable and economical material that provides excellent thermal insulation. Compared to traditional greenhouses, such a greenhouse consumes 60 percent less electricity, while the use of geothermal energy in the greenhouse is an innovative approach for Georgia.
The innovative greenhouse will benefit both small-scale farmers and vocational education students. More than 50 students have already undergone practical training in the greenhouse.
