The "Georgian Calligraphy" contest has been announced
The National Centre of Manuscripts of the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia is launching a calligraphy competition entitled "Georgian Calligraphy". A briefing on this topic was held by Deputy Minister Lia Gigauri and Director of the National Centre of Manuscripts Buba Kudava.
The ultimate goal of the project is to revive the culture of creating handwritten books in Georgia, to popularize an important achievement of Georgian culture – the Georgian script and Georgian calligraphy, and to showcase the creative potential of the contestants.
The Georgian school of calligraphy has a centuries-old tradition. Even in early centuries, hand-copied books became a cultural and national phenomenon. For centuries, Georgian books were intensively created in Georgian scriptoria located both in Georgia and abroad. While creating handwritten books, creative groups of scribes working in monasteries treated the graphic outlines of the Georgian alphabet, the illuminated letters and other decorative elements used to adorn the books with utmost care, the diversity of which revealed the individuality of each book's creator.
In our current reality, the ancient, highly artistic tradition of handwriting is little known and encouraged. Today, many do not realize how refined calligraphy can be applied, at a time when handmade works, as pieces of art, are highly valued in various countries around the world.
