Lesia Ukrainka 148

February 25 marks the birthday of the renowned Ukrainian poet Lesia Ukrainka. To celebrate the poet's jubilee, a ceremony of laying flowers at the bust of Lesia Ukrainka was held in Surami. The event was attended by Mikheil Giorgadze, First Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of Georgia; Yuriy Rybachuk, Deputy Minister of Culture of Ukraine; Ihor Dolhov, Ambassador of Ukraine to Georgia; Nikoloz Antidze, Director of the National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation of Georgia; Giorgi Guraspashvili, Mayor of Khashuri; and Nugzar Samkharadze, Deputy State Representative in Shida Kartli.
With the support of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of Georgia, the full-scale rehabilitation of the Lesia Ukrainka House-Museum in Surami will be carried out by the National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation of Georgia in cooperation with local self-government.
The initiative to restore the memorial house and organize the museum belongs to Ihor Dolhov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to Georgia, who will be actively involved in the rehabilitation process.
Along with the structural reinforcement of the house-museum building and the arrangement of its interior, the rehabilitation process also envisages the reinforcement of the courtyard fence. The courtyard of the house-museum will also be infrastructurally developed. The preparatory stage of the rehabilitation process will be provided by the local municipality, which involves setting up the construction site and moving the museum exhibits to a secure space. The rehabilitation project will also include modern museography of the house-museum, which will give the cultural space more substantive significance in the future.
The Agency will complete the preparation of the project documentation by the spring of 2019.
The Lesia Ukrainka Memorial Museum is located in the 19th-century house of Niko Abazadze, a Surami nobleman and renowned ethnographer, in the urban-type settlement of Surami, Khashuri Municipality. The museum's funds preserve materials related to the life and work of Lesia Ukrainka: the poet's collections, manuscripts, various documents, fine art pieces, numismatic, photographic, and ethnographic materials. The initiative to open the museum came from the writer Giorgi Leonidze.
