Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of Georgia Nunu Mitskevich held a working meeting with Magda Magradze, Executive Director of the Millennium Challenge Fund, which focused on the higher education project "San Diego State University and Georgia 2020" and future plans.
During the meeting, Nunu Mitskevich thanked the Executive Director of the Millennium Challenge Fund for the significant educational and infrastructure projects implemented by the Fund in Georgia. According to the Deputy Minister, intensive work is underway within the framework of the higher education reform to improve the new result-oriented funding model, and sharing the experience of the Millennium Challenge Fund in this process is of utmost importance.
In turn, Magda Magradze summarized the five-year achievements of the project "San Diego State University and Georgia 2020", which were attained both academically and financially through STEM bachelor's programs implemented by a consortium comprising San Diego State University (SDSU), Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, Ilia State University, and the Georgian Technical University.
The internationally accredited (ABET – Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) bachelor's programs, which San Diego State University began implementing in Georgia from the 2014–2015 academic year, cover the following fields: electrical engineering, computer engineering, chemistry/biochemistry, computer science, civil engineering, and construction engineering. Across 5 cohorts, 780 students have been enrolled in these programs, who will receive dual Georgian and American diplomas. It is also significant that within the framework of the program, in order to ensure the proper conduct of the educational process, professors and teaching staff were retrained, and the infrastructure of Georgian universities was built and rehabilitated, including the establishment of new laboratories.
